New Delhi, Apr 22: Taking into account the data collected during the recent earthquakes, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has updated the seismic zone map of the country dividing it into four zones. Now there are only four seismic zones - two, three, four and five as BIS merged zones one and two. Zone five is the severest in terms of earthquake proneness and damage, an official release said here today.
Zone-five comprises the entire northeastern India, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, a part of north Bihar and Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Areas which fall under zones four and five are considered to be most active, it said.
No part of the country is free from earthquake hazard, the release added. Bureau Report
