Centre to introduce amendment to Electricity Act, 2003
Kolkata, Oct 28: The government will introduce an amendment to the Electricity Act, 2003 in the next session of Parliament for which cabinet approval has been secured, the Chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, A K Basu, said.

Speaking at an interactive session organised by the
Calcutta Chamber of Commerce here today, Basu said that the
amendment seeks to introduce open access which would enable
the consumeRs to choose between generating utilities for
purpose of maximising consumer welfare.
He said that the amended Act would be binding on the state regulatory commissions for allowing the consumeRs to exercise their choice.
Basu said that the individual regulatory commissions would be given five yeaRs' time to introduce open access in the respective states.
Talking about the new act, Basu said that it was designed to usher in reforms in the power sector with the mandate to make the state electricity boards viable.
