New Delhi, Jan 09: The government today said it was working at a fast pace on putting data security laws in place to address the privacy concerns of companies and countries which outsource work from India. Many countries of the European Union (EU) have put data security laws in place which do not allow sensitive data about its citizens to go out to other countries which do not have such laws.
''Data security is an important matter and we have had discussions with EU countries in this regard. We are studying data security laws of many countries. We are also studying as to why countries like US and Japan did not pass such laws'', Telecom and Information Technology Minister Arun Shourie told newsmen.
After announcing second Asian IT Ministers' summit, which is to be held in Hyderabad on January 11-12, Shourie said data security was also important from the point of view of security of the vital systems of the country,
Shourie said the finance ministry decision to cut duties on telecom and electronics equipment would give a further boost to it and telecom sectors. ''We have been demanding such cuts and they are in tune with our obligation to cut duties on electronic products to zero by 2005,'' the minister said.
