Chennai, June 19: The Centre would initiate a probe on the treatment given to the Union Minister Murasoli Maran at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, once the Prime Minister A B Vajpayee instructed his ministry, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, A Raja, said today. He told reporters at the Chennai airport that already there was a committee, headed by the director-general of health services, to go into the complaints on the treatment of patients in the hospitals. If need be, the doctors who attended on Maran would also be inquired, he said. On the DMK president M Karunanidhi's demand for the probe, Raja said Karunanidhi had raised the demand on the basis of opinions expressed by the doctors at Methodist Hospital, Houston. His demand was only to find out the truth, Raja said. On Karunanidhi's charge against AIIMS, which functioned under the Union Health Ministry, that the institute had not taken into account the fever developed by Maran, he said Karunanidhi had only stated if the high fever suffered by Maran after the replacement of a valve in his heart at the AIIMS had been detected, then he would not have suffered complications. On Maran's son Kalanidhi Maran's decision to bear his father's medical expenses, he said the Centre was bearing the bill of Maran as he was entitled to as a minister. Bureau Report
