Bangkok, June 22: Praising the recent peace efforts by India and Pakistan, Japan today said a halt to cross-border terrorism was the key to maintain stability. During a meeting Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri had with his Japanese counterpart Yoriko Kawaguchi, the two sides discussed moves to ease tensions between India and Pakistan, with Tokyo stressing that a halt to cross-border terrorism was key to maintain stability, Japanese foreign ministry spokesman Hatsuhisa Takashima said.

The two ministers are in the northern city of Chiang Mai to attend the second Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) meeting which is also being attended by Indian minister for IT and communication Arun Shourie.

Kawaguchi praised the recent efforts by New Delhi and islamabad to defuse tensions.
"She also urged the Pakistani government to continue efforts to promote peace between the two countries, and she would say the same to the Indian side," Takashima said.

Meanwhile, ministers from 18 countries, who are members of the ACD, are holding a meet on economic cooperation among member nations.

The ACD, the brainchild of Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, aims to promote inter-dependence among Asian countries in all areas of cooperation by identifying Asia's common strengths and opportunities.
The forum also seeks to expand the trade and financial market within Asia and increase the bargaining power of Asian countries in lieu of competition and enhance Asia's economic competitiveness in the global market.
