IN August last year, a shepherd in South Kashmir lost a sheep and, while searching for it, found an ancient Shiv temple that some have already anointed as another Amarnath shrine. Shepherd Ghulam Qadir, from Jindrah in Jammu, never found his sheep, instead, he and his family stumbled upon a real moneyspinner: the Jammu and Kashmir government hasn’t just conferred legitimacy on his find, it has also decided to give him a handsome cash reward for his efforts. The J&K Tourism Department will give Qadir’s family 10 per cent of the cash offerings that would be made at this shrine for a five-year period between 2002 and 2006. Besides, said Parvez Dewan, Commissioner and Secretary, Tourism, one of the members of the family is entitled to be present at the cave during the Amarnath pilgrimage.
