New Delhi, July 18: The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) today refuted criticism that it had manipulated opinion among its members against FDI in print media and said that views of all the members were counted without discrimination, for or against.
Expressing concern over "distorted" media reports on the issue, INS president P G Pawar said in a statement that there was no discrimination in ensuring that the opinion of all the member publications of the groups has been taken into account and placed before the executive committee.
Opinion of the members was counted on the same basis irrespective of whether they expressed their views for or against FDI in print, he said.
His statement comes in the wake of information and broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj's statement in Parliament while replying to a debate on FDI in the print media. Asserting that there was no consensus on the issue in the newspaper industry, Swaraj had said that the INS poll showed that 38 members favoured it while 46 opposed it and that the latter included several editions of a single major newspaper. Pawar said in response to a society circular, in all 84 member publications had responded and while 38 member publications were in favour of allowing FDI in the print media, 46 member publications were against it.
