New Delhi, Sept 02: With an eye to the upcoming assembly elections in the national capital, the Delhi unit of Congress today demanded withdrawal of the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel announced on Sunday. Large number of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) activists, under the leadership of state unit chief Prem Singh, took out a protest demonstration here today demanding rollback in hike, which is one of the steepest in recent years.
Carrying placards and chanting anti-BJP slogans, the demonstrators also demanded the resignation of Petroleum Minister Ram Naik.
After the price hike, petrol in Delhi costs Rs 32.40 per litre, an increase of Rs 2.10 per litre. Diesel now costs Rs 20.33 per litre, an increase of Rs 1.25 per litre.
The Congress activists assembled at Jantar Mantar and proceeded towards Parliament House but were stopped by police near Parliament Street police station.
The party members also courted arrest as a mark of protest.
