The Maharashtra Macchimar Kriti Samiti has urged the state government to investigate into the rising incidents of small fishing boats being rammed by steamers off the Mumbai coast.
Vice president of the Samiti Vijay Bandarkar said in Mumbai on Thursday that last Friday, a steamer Jagpadma rammed into a fishing boat Shubecha with 19 fishermen on board near Naigaum in Thane district and tore their expensive fishing nets.
“Shubecha was rescued by other fishing boats and towed to the coast,” he said. He alleged that this was the fourth such incident in recent times. The previous incidents occurred in Worli, Madh and Khar Danda in which the boats suffered extensive damage. ''At least this time, the boat as well as the fishermen were saved,'' he said. Bureau Report
