Kolkata, Sept 10: Around 45 contestants in two and four wheelers would be seen in action at the Rs 1.83 lakh Tata Bearings Monsoon Rally on September 12 and 13.
The most popular meet in the east Indian rally circuit, the event would be staged in two legs with the first beginning from the Netaji Indoor Stadium here on September 12, clerk of the course Somnath Chakravarty told newspersons here yesterday.
The opening leg would terminate on the same day at the Keenan Stadium, Jamshedpur. The second leg would be flagged off the next day before concluding the same evening.
The event, which has been accorded national status by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, would be run in the popular time-speed-distance format.
Already 25 four-wheelers and 20 two-wheelers have confirmed participation for the 692-km rally. "However, entries are still coming in, and we expect the total will go up," Chakravarty said.



The competitors on four wheelers include defending champion Sanjay Arya, Prasanta Paul, Mitil Chakravarty, Bharat Parekh, Rana Dey and top seed Mukesh Thakkar, he said.



Saswati Nag Chowdhury of Indian Airlines will be a leading participant in the four-wheeler section.



The first leg would cover a total distance of around 362 kms, 18 per cent of which would comprise forest tracks, boulder-strewn riverbeds and red morram roads. The route would pass through the districts of Howrah, Midnapore east and west, as also parts of Jharkhand.



The second leg would cover 330 kms comprising approximately 70 per cent of dirt track and pass through east Singbhum, Midnapore west and Howrah.
