Guwahati, July 13: The Brahmaputra and its tributaries wreaked havoc in 20 districts of Assam as the flood situation turned critical with the death toll mounting to 20. Three deaths were reported today from Dhemaji district in Upper Assam where five lakh people had been affected, official sources said.
Seventeeen deaths were earlier reported from the worst-hit Dhemaji, Morigaon, Kamrup, Nalbari and other flood-hit districts.
In Dhemaji nearly 50,000 villagers were affected as the situation aggravated in Jonai sub-division where 50 villages were inundated in the worst-ever flood in the area, the sources said.

In north Lakhimpur district of Upper Assam road communication was disrupted in several areas.
In Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district in upper Assam, the situation was critical as nearly 100 villages, with a population of nearly five lakh, were submerged, the sources said.
The situation in Goalpara district in Lower Assam also remained grim as thousands of people took shelter in highlands and relief was arranged by the district administration.
The situation was no better in other parts including the famed Kaziranga National Park and Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary where animals, including the famed one-horned rhinos, fled to higher reaches.
More than 23 lakh people were affected in 20 districts the current wave of floods with the army already been called in some of the affected parts to assist civil administration in rescue and relief operations.
