Unnecessary criticism vitiates atmosphere: PM

Raipur, July 19: Taking a strong exception to VHP`s constant criticism of the government, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today said "unnecessarily blaming" it vitiated the atmosphere even as he ruled out a settlement of the Ayodhya issue without involving the Sangh Parivar outfit.
Addressing the BJP`s three-day national executive meeting here, Vajpayee said, "We have passed a resolution on Sri Ram Janambhoomi. It is good that a temple is built at the Ram janamsthan. It is our desire to solve the issue through goodwill. The most important thing is to have negotiations and we will continue on this path."
Vajpayee said nobody was of the opinion that the issue be settled by ignoring VHP. "There could be scope for differences but there should not be allegations and counter-allegations. We have always welcomed constructive comments but unnecessarily blaming vitiates the atmosphere," he said.
The Prime Minister asserted, "We will continue to do what we feel is correct. We will not go back on it." Expressing satisfaction over economic progress the country has achieved under his government, Vajpayee said, "In this changing economic system, we will have to take care of the human aspect. We should not forget it."
Apparently countering the allegations by the opposition and the Sangh Parivar outfits like Swadeshi Jagaran Manch that the government`s economic policies were influenced by the West, he categorically said, "India will never formulate or change its policies under anyone`s pressure."
Asserting the BJP was committed to reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures, the Prime Minister said, "We will not allow attempts to put us in the dock succeed with political motives on the issue."
"We will make all efforts to bring in the legislation on women`s reservation in the coming session of Parliament," he said hours after the national executive adopted a resolution favouring reservation of 33 per cent seats for women in Lok Sabha as double-member constituencies to accommodate them.
Describing the coming assembly elections in five states as "extremely important", Vajpayee said, "These polls will not only decide the fate of those states but also set the direction for the country."
"We are fully confident that we will succeed in these states. These elections are a challenge for us. Let us face them strongly to succeed," he said.
Stressing on keeping the NDA united, he said the formation and continuation of the alliance was a commendable task in Indian politics. "Our good conduct, our honesty and our faith in them are responsible for the formation of the alliance and its survival. More people are joining it and we should bring them in."
The Prime Minister emphasised that simultaneously the BJP should work to strengthen itself. "We are making efforts in that direction and in that context, the Raipur meeting would prove to be very significant."
