Mumbai, Feb 12: In a major crackdown on the betting racket, city police arrested four bookies just before the cricket World Cup matches began in South Africa on February 9. Notorious bookie Vijay Chandulal Shah of Worli in Central Mumbai was arrested on February 8 and three others were held during the weekend, DCP enforcement Surendra Pande told a news agency here today.
The others arrested were Nitin Mehta from Bhandup in North-East Mumbai, Kushal Vasaria from Wadala in Central Mumbai and Suleman Abdul Sheikh from Goregaon in North Mumbai, he said adding all the accused were remanded to judicial custody.
Telephone equipment, mobile phones and computers were also confiscated from their places of operations, he said.
Pande said with the easy availability of mobile phones and pre-paid cards, bookies often change the place of operation, making it difficult for the police to locate them.
"It is not so easy to trace them as it used to be when the bookies were using MTNL land lines", Pande said.
"Mumbai police is on the track of several bookies and we have informed mobile phone companies to assist us," Pande said. "We are well equipped to nab them. We are also monitoring the betting clients".
