Jammu, Aug 08: In a major security beef up, a 4-tier security set-up has been activated around Ranjeet Sagar dam in Jammu and Kashmir following threats by pro-Pakistan militant outfit Hizbul-Mujahideen to target the dam during the period around the Independence Day, a senior police officer said today. "The major security beef up has taken place around and at Ranjeet Sagar dam where a four-tier security set up has been activated by the security agencies," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kathua, Maneesh Sinha said.
The security beef up has been necessitated in view of threats from Hizb militant outfit to target dam during the independence day period," he said.
Located at border trijunction of Kathua district of J and K, Gurdaspur district of Punjab and Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, Ranjeet Sagar dam has a tight security and the set-up would continue even after the independence day, the SSP said. As per intelligence inputs extracted from the interception of wireless messages some time back, Pak-sponsored terrorists of Hizbul-Mujahideen have been tasked to target dam on, or before or after Independence Day.
"We are making all possible efforts to foil any militant attack on the dam or around it to safeguard the dam," Sinha said and added the four-tier security with banned entry of private persons have been implemented in and around power house, turbines, control room and tunnel points.
A close vigil is being monitored on all staff and other people associated with power project and intensified checkings of vehicles on Pathankote-Satwain-Dam Road have been intensified and some Punjab Police commandos deployed at the dam. The security beef up was done after a high-level meeting of top security officers of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and J and K under the chairmanship of IGP, Jammu zone, P L Gupta on Wednesday.
