Chennai, Oct 31: The K Subramaniam Commission, which
enquired into the death of an 18-year-old, Gowri, who
committed self-immolation on September last year after
returning from a police station in the city, has absolved the
police of any role in her death.
The Commission's report, tabled in the state assembly
today, stated that there was absolutely no evidence to
indicate that the police were in any way responsible for the
girl's death. "There is also no iota of evidence to show that
Gowri was abused, harassed or tortured", the report stated.
Gowri was taken to police station along with her mother, who was arrested under provisions of bootleggers act, on September 28 last year and was sent back home with her uncle on the same day and took the extreme step.
Gowri ended her life as she felt dishonoured by the arrest of her mother and her mother's continued criminal life in prohibition offences, the report pointed out.
However, the commission found a lapse on the part of P K Kaliyamoorthy, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Rajeswari, woman sub-inspector, in allowing the juvenile girl to accompany an accused (her mother) in the police jeep and in not forcibly removing the girl from the police jeep.
The government has accepted the findings of the commission and decided to examine in detail the suggestions made by it.
