Glasgow, Mar 15: Liverpool striker El Hadji Diouf has been fined two weeks wages after allegedly spitting at Celtic fans during their UEFA Cup clash in Glasgow, the premier league club said on Friday (March 14). "We have fined the player the maximum of two weeks wages and we will be liaising with Celtic to talk about the most appropriate way of spending the money," Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry said on the club's website. Liverpool would like the money to go to charity in an effort to maintain good relations between the two clubs who drew 1-1 in the first leg of the quarter-final tie at Parkhead on Thursday. "We consider it very important that the good relationships which both Liverpool and Celtic have had over the years should not be soured by this incident," Parry said. The incident, in which the Senegal international appears to have spat at Celtic fans after losing his balance and falling into a section of the crowd, is also being investigated by European body UEFA.

Manager Gerard Houllier, also quoted by the website, said: "The boy has made a mistake. He knows that. We all make mistakes in life because we are all human.

"I am not going to make excuses for him but the boy is young and I can tell you he is devastated by what has happened.

"It is sad that this has overshadowed a great night's football."

UEFA spokesman Romain Vez told Reuters earlier: "We are waiting for the official's report, but we will be looking at video evidence before taking action before next week's return leg."

He added: "UEFA has the power to impose a fine or a suspension on El Hadji Diouf ahead of the second leg but we look at all incidents case by case."

Superintendent Kevin Smith of Strathclyde police said the striker would be interviewed on Friday over the incident.
