A special CBI court on Friday granted bail to BJP MLA from Faridabad, Chander Bhatia, in a criminal case registered against him in 1997. Special judge for CBI cases Dr B B Prasoon ordered Bhatia to furnish a surety bond of Rs 50,000.
Earlier, Bhatia was granted interim bail by the court twice for getting treatment in a hospital at Delhi. During the arguments, Bhatia's counsel had submitted his treatment record in the hospital.
The counsel argued that doctors had diagnosed that Bhatia was suffering from non-alcoholic steatooric hepatitis, which is a "serious disease". He had requested the court to release Bhatia on bail following his condition. However, the CBI counsel had opposed the bail application.
According to the prosecution, a criminal case was registered against Bhatia in October 1997 on the complaint of Mamta Arora, wife of the editor of a local newspaper at Faridabad, who had alleged that Bhatia had threatened the Aroras and ransacked their house.
Later on the direction of Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1998, the case was handed over to CBI for investigation. The agency filed the challan in the court of special judge at Ambala about an year back. Around two months back, Bhatia surrendered before the court and he was sent to judicial custody. Bureau Report
