Centre okays plan to make NE a tourist destination
Guwahati, July 25: Plagued by problems of insurgency and geographical isolation, the north-eastern region is otherwise blessed with rich natural beauty and the Union government has taken up a special plan to make the region an attractive tourist destination.

The eight north-eastern states are endowed with rich natural beauty, serenity and flora and fauna and have diverse tourist attractions and the government attaches great importance to develop infrastructure in view of the tremendous tourist potential, according to an official.
In order to develop and promote the region, the central government's department of tourism has taken several steps to boost tourism which includes opening of a chapter of Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management here.
A full-fledged Institute Of Hotel Management and Catering Techonology is being set up at Shillong. All the north-eastern states were given free booth in the world's largest tourism fair in Berlin, the officials say. The government was also providing financial assistance for fairs and festivals and the states were given a special focus at the marketing conference of overseas offices of the ministry for publicity of tourism spots.
During the year 2001-2002, the tourism department sanctioned rs 1145.29 lakh for various projects relating to development and promotion of tourism of which Rs 620.56 lakh went to the north-eastern states and Sikkim while an additional Rs 9 lakh was also released during the period for ongoing projects.
