San Francisco, Sept 09: Intel said it will launch a new chip on Tuesday with embedded memory, processor and communications functions that is designed to bring more applications to advanced cell phones at lower cost. Intel's so-called "wireless Internet on a chip" is designed for phones that use an emerging wireless network called GSM Evolution, or EDGE.
The proliferation of cell phones with advanced functions has raised the stakes in Intel's bid to take on an entrenched market leader in Texas Instruments Inc., analysts said.
They are both targeting EDGE networks, which allow data to be transmitted two to three times faster than existing GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) wireless networks.
EDGE networks are being deployed predominantly in the United States and are expected to ramp in 2004, the Santa Clara, California-based company said.
