Guwahati, Dec 22: Assam assembly speaker Prithvi Majhi expressed disappointment over the fact that due recognition had not been given to the tribal literature of the North East.
Delivering his inaugural address at the regional meet of All India Tribal Literary Forum (AITLF) yesterday, Majhi, himself an accomplished tribal writer, said both tribal language and rich cultural heritage of the region had been sidetracked by the major languages of India.
The imposition by the non-tribal writers of major languages had deterred its development, he said adding at the backdrop of prominence given to sanskritised major languages in the country, tribal languages have stangnated and were dying out in the present trend of development.
Though major linguists advocate a Sanskrit origin of major Indian languages, he felt these languages have had a foundation in tribal dialects.
Organiser of the regional meet Ramanika Gupta of Ramnika Foundation, who had founded AITLF in association with Sahitya Academy, said prior to the formation of the forum, tribal writers were deprived of a common platform, where they could assemble together to exchange views mutually.

Tribal writers from the NE besides writers from Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Orissa were present in the meet.
