Guwahati, Nov 24: Assam was calm but tense overnight
with no major incident of anti-Bihari or Ulfa violence that
has so far claimed 50 lives in the state, even as security was
tightened for RJD leader Laloo Prasad Yadav's scheduled visit.
Home Commissioner K D Tripathi told a news agency here today that
the night was calm with no incident reported so far.
Stringent security measures were in place to prevent
further outbreak of violence against Biharis in the state that
erupted following the attack on Assamese train passengers in
Bihar, Tripathi said.
Isolated cases of burning of abandoned Bihari huts,
intimidation and physical assaults were however, reported from
different parts of the state.
Security measures have been further heightened in view of
the visit of the RJD supremo to the city as the Ulfa militants
struck whenever major leaders visited the state, sources said.
Patrolling by the army, paramilitary forces and police was on in vulnerable areas, particularly in the Bihari- dominated places to scuttle attempts of ultras at violence, sources said.
People in Bihari settlements spent sleepless nights and kept vigil against attempts by miscreants taking advantage of the situation to harass them.
Laloo Prasad Yadav, leading an eight-member parliamentary delegation, is scheduled to arrive on a goodwill mission to instill confidence and a sense of security among the people from Bihar here.
