Bangalore, Nov 17: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda today demanded a CBI probe into the multi-crore stamp paper scam. Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh had asked for a CBI inquiry and several arrests had been made in Maharashtra but Karnataka was against the CBI probe, he said speaking to reporters here.

Expressing surprise over Karnakata's stand, he said that CBI was the only central agency and the existing system should be believed in.

Gowda said Congress president Sonia Gandhi had herself said that the guilty should not spared. "It is not a question of a party issue. It is a major issue".

Referring to the central vigilance commissioner report on six ministers allegedly seeking personal favours from public sector units chiefs, he said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee should "take a firm and tough stand" on the issue.

On the charge of alleged bribe taking against Union Minister of State for Environment Dilip Singh Judeo, he said Vajpayee should remove him from the ministry.
