Gwalior, July 10: Sixty bonded labourers working for a contractor in a mine at Chonda village in the district were set free by an official team, official sources said today.
The labourers, including children, had been working for about 15 years and were being paid a handful of flour and salt as wages in return for their work.
Following a complaint lodged by an NGO Bandhu Mukti Morcha, an official team led by the sub-divisional magistrate Stul Singh conducted a raid in the village and rescued the labourers.
The labourers said they were treated badly by the contractor who managed to flee just before the officials reached Chonda.
