Lucknow, Aug 27: Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav was today invited by Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri to form government in the state, ending three-day political crisis triggered by collapse of Mayawati-led BSP-BJP coalition.
A day after 63-year old Yadav submitted a letter to
Shastri claiming support of 210 MLAs of various parties and
Independents in the 403-member House, Governor`s principal
secretary Shambhunath handed over a formal invitation to him
for forming the government.
Samajwadi Party, which is the single largest party in the House, also claimed to have the support of 13 MLAs of Mayawati`s Bahujan Samaj Party.
Yadav, who will become Chief Minister for the third time, will take oath tomorrow, his private secretary Jagjivan Prasad told here.
The Samajwadi Party which has 142 members in the House with an effective strength of 402, has support of Congress (16), RLD (14), RKP (four), CPI-M (two) and others 19 besides 13 BSP MLAs.
Yadav had told the Governor, who asked him to furnish a list of supporting MLAs, that he would prove his majority on the floor of the House.
Leader of all major political parties except BJP and BSP had accompanied Yadav for the meeting with the Governor yesterday.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, RLD`s Kokab Hamid and RKP leader Kalyan Singh were among those who accompanied him.
They also separately handed over to the Governor letters extending their support to Yadav.
SP leader Amar Singh said Yadav was in Rae Barelli and was expected to return around 1.30 pm following which he would meet the Governor and finalise his programme for the swearing in.
This will be Yadav`s third stint as Chief Minister. He had earlier held the post from December 1989 to may 1991 and from December 1993 to June 1995.
In 1989 he had headed a Janata Dal government with outside support of Congress-I but he could not continue for long due as the latter withdrew support to it.
After dismissal of Kalyan Singh government following demolition of Babri mosque, Yadav entered into an electoral pact with BSP and the combine came to power in 1993. Yadav became Chief Minister but the honeymoon did not last long due to many unsavoury incidents and BSP withdrew support to it in 1995. Bureau Report
