Guwahati, Nov 18: The debarring of some Railway Recruitment Board Examination candidates from Bihar on November 09 in Assam sparked off tension between the two states which resulted in attack on train passengers from Assam in Bihar, North Eastern Frontier Railway General Manager Vipan Nanda said today. Nanda told reporters that the admit cards of some of the candidates were torn or thrown away by some elements and they were unable to take the Group D exam.

Those examinees submitted a representation to the railway authorities at Katihar in Bihar to allow them to take the test again. Accordingly, the matter was taken up with the railway ministry and necessary instructions were issued for those candidates to take the exam again, Nanda said. However, enraged by the incident in Assam, students ransacked railway property and attacked passengers from Assam and Northeastern region on November 11 and 12, he said.

Railway Minister Nitish Kumar had sent the Director General of Railway Protection Force to Patna and Kathihar to ensure that adequate security arrangements were made, he said.

Kumar also spoke to the Chief Ministers of both the states and various political parties to defuse the tension, Nanda informed. The minister's decision today to postpone the third round of the Group-D exam was taken following his discussions with Assam Chief Minister who told him that the security forces would be inadequate in view of the coming civic polls in the state, he said.
