Army shot dead three hardcore Ulfa militants while they were trying to cross over into the country, besides destroying a branch of the outfit in separate incident in Assam. The Ultras were killed when they were crossing over into the country from neighbouring Bhutan near Darrangamela in Nalbari district, official sources said.
An AK-56 rifle, A .38 revolver, A .22 revolver, some Chinese-made grenades and ammunition were recovered from the slain Ultras.
In another operation, the army arrested the chief controller of the Tipling Tingraj branch of the Ulfa.
The security personnel, following a tip off, apprehended Jugal Sonowal and another person who was alleged to have helped the Ultras in upper Assam's Lengrai village. Sources claimed that following the arrest of Sonowal, who was a hardcore Ulfa militant and received arms training in a foreign country, the Tipling Tingraj branch was destroyed.
