New Delhi, Feb 21: Former Chief Justice of India, Justice B N Kirpal has been appointed chairman of the first seven-member National Forest Commission set up to review all existing policies and legal frameworks relating to forest management and their impact on ecological, scientific and socio-economic aspects. The commission would also examine the current status of forest administration and the forestry institutions both at the state and national level, an official release said here today.
The commission would submit its report in two years.
It is expected to make recommendations to achieve sustainable forests, wild life management, bio-diversity conservation and ecological security.


The possibility of establishing a meaningful partnership between forestry management and local communities including tribals would also be looked into by the commission.
Other members of the commission include Director General of forests M K Sharma, noted environmental activists Chandi Prasad Bhatt and M K Ranjitsinh, Professor J S Singh of Benaras Hindu University and former Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu A P Muthuswamy. The Additional Director General of forests would be the ex-officio member secretary of the commission.
