Over a thousand journalists in Chennai came out to protest the detention of Sun TV journalist G Suresh. Suresh had been arrested on Thursday for accompanying former minister K Ponmudi to a state godown without permission.

About 200 journalists have courted arrested so far. The journalists wanted to submit a memorandum to chief minister Jayalalitha for the release of Suresh.
Police was called in large numbers to keep the situation under control.

During her previous tenure in 1991-96, Jayalalitha’s government had filed cases against 110 journalists. She had also never felt a need to give interviews to any of the scribes.

The government may now come under pressure to amend its ways. Bureau Report
