A 256-line telephone exchange at Sogam in Badgam district of central Kashmir was damaged in a blast while security forces gunned down three militants elsewhere in the valley on Sunday night.
Official sources said a blast took place in the exchange at Sogam, about 22 km from here, causing damage to its machinery late on Sunday night. However, the cause of the blast was not immediately clear as one report said the explosion was due to a grenade lobbed by militants from outside while another report said it was a rocket that hit the exchange.
General manager telecommunications told news persons that there was a blast in the exchange.
He said he has rushed senior officials to Sogam and the exact damage to the machinery would be known only after officials will return. Meanwhile, security forces gunned down two foreign militants at Haigam near Sopore in north Kashmir late on Sunday night. Two AK rifles, three magzaines and some rounds of ammunition were recovered from the site.
One ultra was killed at Chandigam in the wee hours on Monday during a search operation, police said.
