Wildlife experts from the World Society for the protection of Animals - the WSPA - paid a visit to Kabul Zoo on Sunday. The organisation was there to assess conditions in the war torn facility in a bid to help rebuild its crumbling structure.

The face of the truly forgotten - the residents at Kabul Zoo have been struggling to survive as war has raged around them. But the generosity of animal lovers from all over the world will make life easier for these animals.

Backed by donations of almost a quarter of a million U-S-dollars, the WSPA team has brought food and medical supplies for the animals. Among those needing help is Marjan the lion - he can`t see and finds it difficult to move, but the WSPA`s John Walsh says he`ll come through.

Kabul zoo, which once had an impressive collection of fifty species and a captive breeding programme, was one of the first in Central Asia. Now, just ten percent remains intact.
The WSPA donation will help restore the zoo to its former glory.
