Gangtok, May 27: The grand old man of Sikkim politics and the first chief minister of the state Kazi Lhendup Dorjee Khangsarpa was today honoured with the 'Padma Vibhushan' for his contribution to the democratic movement in the state in the early 70s which culminated in the merger of Sikkim with the Indian union in 1975. Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, accompanied by his ministerial colleagues, went to Kazi's residence at Chakung house in Kalimpong in West Bengal today to confer upon him the honnour on behalf of the President of India, official sources said here.
The second highest civilian award was given to the 98-year-old 'Kazisahab' today as he could not make it to New Delhi due to health reasons last month to accept the award.
Known as the 'Father of Sikkim Democracy', the nonagenarian leader had spearheaded an intense movement against monarchy in Sikkim in 1973 and finally succeeded in establishing a democratic regime in the state.
Speaking to the press soon after receiving the award from the Sikkim Chief Minister, Kazi said, "I dedicate this award to the people of state."
The Chief Minister said it was a great recognition for Kazi and a rare honour for the people of the state. Bureau Report
