United Nations, Nov 07: Warning the rich nations against coercing developing countries into obligations they can ill afford, India has stressed that any obligation assumed by them should be based on their ability of human resource development, indigenous economic resource mobilization and national conviction. Given the difference in levels of development and the ability to assume obligations, it is imperative that concerns of developing nations be addressed in any multilateral trading environment, its delegate P R Dasmunsi, MP, told a United Nations committee.

The participation of developing nations in the global trading system, he emphasised, must ensure improved market access and price stabilisation for exports, allow greater "policy space" to develop local industries and reduce barriers to their exports.
Without these the confidence of developing nations, already shaken by recent events, would be further eroded, Dasmunsi warned.

He also called for elimination of distortions in global agriculture markets and safeguarding the specific food and livelihood security and rural development concerns of developing nations in line with Doha mandate.

Expressing concern over resource crunch faced by developing nations and net transfer of resources to developed countries reaching "alarming levels," he called for injecting an element of priority in trade negotiating to enable developing states to meet the development goals.
