Ahmedabad, Sept 11: Several non-government organisations here today welcomed the Supreme Court's observations on the appeal in Best Bakery case filed by Gujarat government even as the government maintained that the legal procedures to be carried out would be done as per the court's directives "after studying the observations." "We will study all the legal aspects of the observations and any decision regarding future course of action will be taken only after this", state government spokesman I K Jadeja told a news agency here tonight.

Terming it as an important step in right direction, Prashant, a voluntary organisation working for human rights said, "The strong statements from the SC will hopefully ensure that wheels of justice will start moving in Gujarat once again." "Only if the government is able to guarantee security, justice and other constitutional rights to every citizen, especially weak and vulnerable, can it talk of a 'vibrant' Gujarat", the organisation said, in a statement here.

Welcoming the Supreme Court's remarks, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) said, "It is high time that the state government honours the court by restoring the rule of law, punishing the culprits and winning the confidence of riot victims."

Former Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party president Chhabildas Mehta said, "Supreme Court observing that the state government must quit if it cannot protect people, is a slap on the face of BJP. At last now the people here have hope that justice will be done." Bureau Report
