United Nations, Sept 18: Stung by the United States veto of their resolution, the Arab group has sought an emergency session of the 191-member General Assembly to adopt a resolution demanding Israel end threats against Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and rescind its decision
to expel him.
No date has yet been set but diplomats say it could
take place as early as Friday.
Spokeswoman for the Assembly Michelle Montas confirmed that a letter seeking a special session has been received but said no decision has yet been taken as to when it would take place.
With wide support among the member states for the Palestinian position, the resolution is bound to be adopted by an overwhelming majority. But the Assembly resolution are not binding, like those of the Security Council, and are not enforceable. However, they do show how the world at large feels and thus have moral value.
After more than two hours of closed-door discussion yesterday, Palestinian UN envoy Nasser al-Kidwa told reporters that the Arabs have decided to call for an emergency session. Bureau Report
