Taken off guard by the arrival of scores of Russian troops in Kabul, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke to Russia's foreign minister by phone this week and urged Moscow to avoid abrupt diplomatic or military moves in Afghanistan that might undermine trust between the U.S. and Russia, U.S. officials said, according to The Washington Post's Thursday editions. Powell also said Russia should avoid doing anything to promote its longtime ally, Northern Alliance leader Burhanuddin Rabbani, as the official leader of a post-conflict Afghanistan, the Post reported.
