Mumbai, June 13: Hundreds of rival political supporters hurled stones at one another on Thursday in downtown Mumbai, injuring several policemen, after the state government won a motion to stay in power. At least 500 people, split between backers of Maharashtra state`s ruling Congress party and right-wing Hindu groups, threw stones at one another outside the state assembly after the vote in the house.

An equal force of police was sent out to control the crowd. At least three officers were rushed to hospital after being hit by stones, said a reporter at the scene.

One motorcycle in the compound of Rane`s residence was set afire by the mob, police said, adding a cameraman of a TV channel and a couple of policemen were injured in the stone pelting. Police have cordoned off the troubled areas.
