Washington, Sept 23: Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres said Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat should help bring about an end to violence or be replaced by an alternative leader. "We don't want to expel him. We don't want to kill him. We don't want to hurt him. What we want is that either he show he can control the situation" or an alternative leadership, Peres told a TV channel after the Israeli army halted its demolition of Arafat's compound in Ramallah where the Palestinian leader has been under siege by Israeli troops for three days.
"There is no physical danger nor to Arafat or the other people," Peres said, adding that water supplies could be turned back on.
"If they really want to change the whole situation the should put the Hamas under their control," he said. "It cannot be that when it comes to shooting and killing there can be nobody to answer."

"The Palestinian fate is in the hands of the Palestinians . We are still for peace.
"I am all for peace; but peace must be done by the two sides," Peres insisted.
Jordan's top diplomat Marwan Muasher told reporters "isolating Yasser Arafat in this way is making him more popular."
"We do have a plan that is ready but we need to engage with the Israelis on a peaceful settlement. This is not about one person; this is about the end of the occupation," the top Jordanian diplomat said, referring to the two-state, three-year plan. Bureau Report
