Indian Wells, Mar 16: On the women's side, 16th seed Maria Sharapova silenced trash-talking fellow teenager Sesil Karantcheva, dispatching the feisty 14-year-old from Bulgaria 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in their third-round grudge match.
Karantcheva had boasted before the contest that she would ''kick ass'' against Sharapova, who is tipped as the next major star and already owns a WTA title.
On a blisteringly hot day on court, the women's draw played to reasonable form with Lindsay Davenport crushing Australian Samantha Stosur 6-0 6-3 in the third-round. Combined with her 6-0 6-0 whitewashing of Mara Santangelo in her opening match, Davenport had won 18 games in a row until Stosur held serve in the first game of the second set. It was a career first for Davenport. "Unfortunately, I don't normally keep my concentration that long," the American third seed said.
