Dhaka, Aug 21: In the first bye-election participated by the Opposition Awami League since it lost the general elections two years ago, Bangladesh's ruling party candidate today emerged victorious with a margin of over 20,000 votes.
State-owned Bangladesh television, quoting Election Commission sources, said in its late night bulletin that Khadeza Amin of ruling Bangladesh National Alliance had secured more than 95,000 votes defeating Awami League's advocate Jubed Ali in the Netrakona constituency.
The by-election was necessitated due to the death in June of BNP lawmaker Nurul Islam Talukdar, Khadeza Amin's husband.
