Muzaffarpur, Aug 28: Notwithstanding Bihar's featuring at the bottom of the literacy ladder in the country, its Muzaffarpur district has been chosen for Satyen Mitra Memorial Literacy Award for best performance in literacy campaign in the country for the year 2002-03. The district which has a the literacy achievement of 86.14 per cent would be conferred the award on the occasion of International Literacy Day, on September eight, district magistrate Amrit Lal Meena told here today while showing a letter received from Union Human Resource Development Ministry in this regard.
The award, which was instituted under the National Literacy Mission Programme in 1996, is given on the recommendations of an expert team.
The award would be given by Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi at a function in New Delhi on September eight, the DM said quoting the letter.
The selection of Muzaffarpur as the best performing district comes as a surprise as Bihar's less than 40 per cent literacy rate is among the poorest in the country.
