Twenty people were killed and 72 injured, three of them foreign tourists, when an overcrowded bus plunged into a 300 feet deep gorge near Khardungla in frontier region of Ladakh on Wednesday. The state roadways bus, travelling from Nobra to Leh, met with the accident at South Polo, 50 kms from Leh, when the driver was negotiating a sharp curve, an official spokesman said in Srinagar. Air force helicopters were pressed into service for rescue operations, the spokesman said, adding the injured had been admitted to Sonam Narboo and army hospitals where the condition of ten of them was stated to be critical.
