Enron Corp has sacked more than 50 employees at its various Indian units, including the controversial Dabhol Power Co Ltd, as part of its worldwide job cuts, an Enron India spokesman said on Thursday.
He said that some of the employees to go were from Enron India Pvt Ltd, the company's Indian subsidiary.
"These employees working for Enron units have been told to go by the end of this week. We will issue a statement soon. A few critical staff members will, however, be retained till further notice to look after various security and legal issues," the spokesman said.
Enron is retrenching around 4,000 employees worldwide following the global slowdown and its failed merger with Dynegy Inc of the US. Dabhol Power is a joint venture between Enron Corp and its two associates - Bechtel and General Electric - and the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB).
The company set up a 2,184-MW power project in Maharashtra, but has stopped generating power following payment defaults by MSEB, the sole buyer. Bureau Report
