Patalganga (Maha), June 07: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) will increase its focus on specialty and differentiated polymer products and spur up research and development activities in this sector to stay ahead of competition and improve bottomline. A shift from commodity-based polymer products to specialty-based products is being witnessed around the world, and we expect a rapid growth in the latter segment, RIL president (polyester sector) Subodh P Sapra told reporters at the inauguration of its technology centre here today.

Even though the non-apparel polymer sector in India is only to a tune of about seven per cent, that in China is 40 per cent and the rest of the world is 48 per cent, he said, adding that this shift is likely to be experienced in India.

RIL would focus on R&D of its existing specialty products, including the already commissioned super black and dyefast while it would also increase its focus on ready-to-be launched 3s, which focussed on construction sector, he said.
The other specialty products the company would focus on are superdye, stretch and super coarse, he added.
The increased focus on R&D would also help in cutting down cost and time taken for production, apart from improving their quality, he added.

Meanwhile, commenting on the Reliance Technology Centre (RTC), Sapra said that RIL intends to make it as the polyester R&D hub of the world as the industry is shifting its production base to Asia.
