New Delhi, Feb 17: Showing indignation over ''neglect'' of Banjara community, the Banjara cell of Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that a candidate from Banjara community should be given ticket on Hathras (Res) Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. ''Banjara community also comes under scheduled caste and has a population of six crore in the country, but they have never been given their due,'' Swaroop Singh, president of BJP Banjara Cell said here today in a release.
In Uttar Pradesh alone, there are as many as 58 lakh Banjaras and they have an influence on about 50 LS seats, he pointed out. Despite this, on 13 reserved seats out of a total of 80 LS seats in Uttar Pradesh, never before was a Banjara candidate fielded, he said. In order to take Banjara community into the society's mainstream, the BJP should consider giving atleast the Hathras (Res) seat, which dominated by the community members, to a Banjara candidate.
