To unravel the conspiracy behind Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, a senior CBI official left on Friday night for Canada to investigate certain aspects of the role of LTTE and whether some of its conduits were hiding in that country.
The CBI has approached nearly 23 countries including Canada seeking details about LTTE members suspected to be linked with the assassination. The agency sources said R N Kaul, the Joint Director of Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency, set up in 1998 to follow up on the leads thrown up by Jain Commission which probed conspiracy aspect of the assassination, would meet the Canadian authorities for the required information. Kaul was also a member of the team deputed by the Government to attend a seminar on terrorism in that country, the sources said. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 by an LTTE suicide bomber at an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. In January 1998, 26 people were convicted for the murder. Bureau Report
