New Delhi, July 28: As per estimates provided by Registrar General of India through their sample registration system for 1998, as many as 407 women die due to causes related to pregnancy and childbirth for every one lakh live births, Rajya Sabha was informed today. The World Health Organisation estimates for 1999 suggested that globally six lakh women die every year due to these causes, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare A Raja said in a written reply.
Replying to another question, he said Rs 1,03,000 crore was being spent annually on public health safety in the country which is roughly 4.9 per cent of GDP in the year 2000.
Tuberculosis: There are about 22 lakh new TB cases occurring every year in the country, Raja informed the House and added that to control it the national TB control programme is in operation in the country since 1962.
Physiotherapy: With the increasing population, the demand for services of medical professionals and other para medical professionals, including physiotherapists is increasing, he said.
However, he said, no specific survey has so far been carried out to assess the requirement of physiotherapists in the country.
Courts: Minister of State for Law and Justice P C Thomas said that family courts are yet to be set up in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Punjab, Nagaland, and in the Union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Lakshdweep.
