Shillong, Mar 07: Militants belonging to Achik National Volunter Council (ANVC) ambushed a Border Road Organisation vehicle killing one Army captain and two jawans and relieved them of Rs 70 lakhs at Rongjeng village in East Garo hills district, official sources said here today. The militants who were hiding in the jungle opened fire at the vehicle, killing the Army captain M M Babu, driver of the vehicle Ganesh Babu and jawan Ramesh Babu yesterday, sources said. Besides Rs 70 lakh meant for salary, the militants took away two SLR rifles. They also ambushed the vehicle of East Garo Hills district superintendent of police S D Sangma who was passing through the same road.
However, Sangma escaped unhurt. His bodyguards returned fire, sources said adding, the militants fled into the dense jungles leaving behind a sack of coins.

Immediately after the incident, police and CRPF launched a combing operation but no arrests have been made so far.

In another incident a six member group of ANVC militants brandishing AK-47 rifles abducted the head master of Katuligaon high school and a teacher from Rongjeng village in East Garo Hills district, sources said.
