Bangalore, Feb 07: British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Jack Straw today urged India to take steps to open up the market for legal services and allow entry of British firms to set up their offices here. ''We are not asking British lawyers to be allowed to submit cases before the Indian courts, but allow them to operate from India to provide international legal services,'' he said, while speaking on 'Britain and India: a changing and prospering partnership' here. He had raised the issue with Union Industries and Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley, he said, adding that the entry of British legal firms would also help the young Indian legal fraternity to gain greater expertise in the field. Similarly, Straw said, India should come out with more liberalisation in the agricultural sector and permit the entry of agricultural produce from Europe. He was not here to bargain, the minister said adding India should realise that there was a need to change as globalisation would benefit the Indian agriculture. He firmly ruled out the British government putting any obstacle in outsourcing of services from his country. It was for the market to determine whether outsourcing was economically beneficial to domestic industries and would result in creation of more opportunities within the country. Britain itself was a major outsourcing country with as many as 5,500 call centres in operation and providing employment to 400,000 people, he added. Bureau Report
