Most parts of northern region smarted under severe cold claiming two more lives as fog disrupted normal life at most places in the region on Wednesday. The current spell of cold wave has so far claimed eight lives in Uttar Pradesh and two in Rajasthan.
The plains of Uttar Pradesh continued to reel under cold wave conditions while higher ranges of Himalayas in Uttaranchal received heavy snowfall for the second day.
A severe cold wave gripped the region forcing people to remain indoors after heavy snowfall in Kamet, Dronagiri, Chaukhamba, Nanadadevi, Trishool and Badrinath. In Kanpur, mercury dipped further as icy winds lashed the industrial city as one more died due to cold.
A thick blanket of fog enveloped the national capital throwing normal life including air traffic out of gear.
Heavy fog, the season's first, disrupted over a dozen flights coming and leaving the Indira Gandhi international airport. The fog also affected all trains coming in and leaving the city.
