Mumbai, Sept 12: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorities in Maharashtra today suspended production at a plant of bottled water in north-western suburbs here following reports of presence of ants in the bottled water.
"We have asked the bottling plant at Vile Parle to suspend their production of bottled water till they rectify the lapses relating to safety and purification of water for human consumption," FDA director Uttam Khobragade told news agencies.
The presence of ants in bottled water was detected at Alibag in neighbouring Raigad district on Wednesday and subsequently a complaint was lodged with the FDA.
The bottled water was from the Vile Parle plant and after the complaint FDA officials visited the plant and detected lapses, he said.
The underground water storage tank was not "well protected" and its cover was also rusted, he added.
Since the Brihanmumbai municipal corporation is the licensing authority, the FDA has also asked them to look into the matter, he said.
